Makita circular saws were one of the very first to challenge skilsaw's dominant position back in the early 1980s, with their own version of a heavy duty circular saw. What they offered back then was a lighter worm-drive saw that had a unique blade braking system. It was quite revolutionary back then, but it's really no big deal now.
Earlier Versions of Makita Circular Saws
Even so, their lighter and far more safer to operate saw just didn't take off. The reason for that was simple, and that was that it noticeably kicked to the side when the trigger was pulled. It really wasn't that big a deal, unless the user was trying to do fast multiple cuts. Then it became a problem.

A Nice Selection of Deep Cutting Large Blade Saws
