The fact is that there are over 600 different Makita batteries available in their complete lineup, so there are two things you really should know before you go looking for a replacement. You need to know either the model number of the battery you need, or you need its part number.
Even then, it doesn't hurt to know the differences between the three different general types. Each type has its pros and cons, and what electrical tool you have, and what you use it for can determine what type of battery suits you and your tool best.

The Ni Cad Battery
The nickel cadmium or Ni Cad battery has been around for decades, and in that time other more advanced battery technologies have been developed. Through it all though, the Ni Cad continues to be a top seller, and for two good reasons. They're the cheapest to buy and they have a high power out-put rate.
Ni Cads are slow to charge, the most susceptible to the memory effect, and degrade the quickest. However; for cordless power tools like saws that gulp a lot of juice, they can put it out quickly due to their low internal level of resistance. Be aware that Ni Cads have a very low tolerance for abuse and neglect.
The Ni-MH Battery
The nickel-metal hydride or Ni-MH battery costs just a little bit more than the Ni Cad, and may in fact be a good alternative. For starters, this type of battery has no memory effect, so you don't have to baby them like you do Ni Cads. They also have three times the power storage to weight ratio which is a definite plus.
The only drawback they have that may prevent you from switching over, is that these batteries can't quickly dump as much power as Ni Cads. They simply don't have the same high out-put capacity. The Ni-MH is great for tools with low power appetites, but for juice hungry tools like cordless saws, they often don't have enough “kick”.
One of Their Top Selling Ni-MH Batteries
Currently two of Makitas best selling Ni-MH batteries are the 18 Volt (2200) & (3000) mAh. They have a black base with white top, and weigh in at 1276 grams (2.8 pounds). The 3000 battery is compatible with Makita UB181D, ML180, SC190DWDE, Makita 4334, 5000, 6300, 8400 and their JR & LS Series. The 2200 battery is compatible with Makita UB181D, ML180 and their SC190DWDE Series
The LI Battery
The lithium-ion or LI battery is the very best of all types of Makita batteries. Quite simply, it's everything that the Ni Cad and the Ni MH batter is not. It charges the quickest, and hold up to four times the power of an equal sized Ni Cad. It also has no memory effect, and has a higher power output capacity.
This type of battery is also far more resilient, and as a result has a longer lifespan. LI batteries store well, and don't lose their charge near as fast over long periods of non use. They're quite simply the best that Makita makes. There is one drawback though, and that is the this type of battery is the most costly to purchase.
One of Their Top Selling Lithium-Ion Batteries
One of the most popular selling lithium-ion Makita batteries right now, is their LXT 18-volt 3 Ah battery. It's been proven to hold and provide over its service lifetime, a full 280% the power of standard Ni Cad and Ni MH batteries, as it delivers twice the number of charging cycles.
In storage, it also has only 20% of the discharge rate of comparable sized Ni Cads and Ni MH batteries, and it has a built in shock absorber. This battery also features a total 16 contact terminals, which makes it ideal for use in high vibration power tools, and it comes with a one year guarantee.
Getting the Most Out of Your Batteries
Lack of proper care can degrade the overall performance level of even the best quality batteries such that Makita batteries are, and proper care begins from the moment you take yours out of the package. So the following is a list of tips that you can use to insure that you get the maximum lifespan and performance out of yours.
The Battery Memory Effectively
From the very first time you plug your NI Cad battery into your charger, make sure to allow it to charge to its full capacity. Of course during your busy work day, this isn't always feasible. Even so, make a point of draining it completely then recharging it completely every three weeks or so.
Keep Your Batteries Clean
Now you don't have to give them a spit shine. However; dirt or impurities like oil on the contacts can interfere with their ability to make a solid connection. Use a small cotton cloth that's soaked in alcohol to clean your batteries every now and again.
Give them Regular Use
Storing Ni Cad and Ni MH batteries for long lengths of time without using them, can have a negative effect on their overall performance level. Make a point of keeping track of any batteries that are used intermittently, so you can know when it's time to give them their bi-weekly exercise session.
Proper Storage for Makita Batteries
If you must store Makita batteries, then do so in a mild constant temperature. Heat in particular can over time, degrade a batteries performance level. It's also best to store them out of a tool or laptop, up off the ground and well away from any metal objects.
